Holistic Therapy

Holistic therapy is a generic term for any treatment that is intended to treat the individual as a whole (mind, body and spirit).

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs - Fruit Peels)

They are mild organic acids found in many common fruits and food:

  • Glycolic acid from sugar cane
  • Citric acid from citrus fruits
  • Malic apples from apples and white grapes
  • Lactic acid from sour milk

Their action is to break down the stratum corneum, or horny outer layer of the skin, causing the dead cells to be sloughed off.

Benefits and Effects

  • Weaken the intercellular bonds which bind the skin cells together – improving natural exfoliation
  • Improve the texture and appearance of the skin
  • Help to re-hydrate the skin
  • Improve the permeability of the skin to other products
  • Stimulate collagen production, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The action of AHAs can be quite strong, so in retail products a ‘buffer’ is included which reduces the strength and the irritation of the skin.

The concentration of acids vary between professional products; professional glycolic acids have a strength between 40 to 70 %.

The higher percentages must only be applied under medical supervision.

The manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines on application times must be followed closely.
